POLYLUX : PASSIVE FILTER HARMONIC : RTL / RTLX LINE INDUCTOR

The problem

Frequency converters, drives, softstarters, and other non-linear loads generate harmonics and commutation spikes in the electrical system. The harmonics and spikes are caused by the non linear power consumption of the diode bridge at the input of such loads. These distortions cause several problems in an electrical installation :

Problems caused by harmonics :

  • Overheating of electrical cables and power transformers
  • Voltage drop in cables
  • Damage of capacitor banks

Problems caused by commutation spikes :

  • Malfunctioning of PLC’s, computers, electronic and computer based equipment
  • Damage of the capacitors in the frequency converter, causing premature fall out

Note that commutation spikes are often invisible in measurements due to their short duration. Problems due to commutation spikes are therefore often confused with harmonic problems, however only filters that do eliminate the commutation spikes will provide a good solution.

The solution

POLYLUX line inductors, series RTL and RTLX filter the harmonics to a low level (approx. 50% reduction of 5th harmonic, 80% reduction of 7th harmonic). Additionally, the RTL and RTLX line inductors completely eliminate the commutation spikes. Line inductors are the easiest and most cost effective devices for solving due to harmonics and commutation spikes caused by frequency converters, drives and soft starters.

How to use

The line inductors should be installed at the input of the frequency converter. One line inductor shall be used for each frequency converter, it is not possible to use one inductor for several frequency converters. The line inductor is selected according to the rating of the connected motor (not the rating of the frequency converter), see table. It is important not to oversize the line inductor.
